Those of us that have a passion for writing tend to run into the same issues: we just weren’t born with a good how to write book hardwired into our brain.

Having decided that we want to write, we often experience many false starts and unfinished works until we have gone through the process of writing a book once from start to finish. Having done it once, we then find it easier to repeat the process.

Getting through that process even just once is what floors most writers. Some keep going and eventually succeed, but far too many writers grind to a halt. They stop being writers who are engaged in writing, and they go back to thinking about it but not actually doing it. A lot of dreams and passions get shoved back into a drawer and left to wither.

And the writers that we read, they don’t help either. In interviews and on television they gloss over just how hard it was to write that book, and just how awful the earlier drafts were. No, they prefer you to believe that they are gifted and talented enough to produce the final draft straight away. Well, maybe they had to correct a few spelling mistakes, but basically the book just wrote itself.

Most of them would rather lose a limb (but not the one that they write with) than publicly admit that they have used a how to write book or two in the past! Most writers work hard at covering their tracks, so that you can’t see the joins and structures that underpin their writing.

Yet if you think about it, in any field of human endeavour, the successful people all put themselves through regular training and coaching to improve their skills. Top guitarists still have lessons, singers train with coaches, and sportspeople sometimes have several coaches. So what do writers have?

Well, writers have their secret how to write book collection. That’s right, your favourite writers will almost certainly have several different dog-eared and well used copies of various how to write books that they use to self-coach their writing.

Which is where a book like The Author’s Toolkit comes in. A handy book that covers every step of the writing process in short and easy to follow chapters. Step by step procedures for how to write, taking you from your initial ideas and research, all the way through the actual writing, manuscript submission, getting an agent, and finally to the satisfaction of publishing your book.

Better still, the author has used and developed this book in countless classes and coaching sessions. It has already helped countless writers get back up from the floor and back to their writing seat.

If you are having trouble with your writing, this how to write book may just have what you are looking for. No writer can afford to be without the tools provided in this guide. Just remember though - when you have become a famous and successful writer, do the rest of us a favour, and recommend the how to write books that helped you get published.

I bumped into an old friend recently. Last time we had met, we had spent hours discussing the books we would each like to write. When he saw me walking towards him the other day, he smiled sheepishly. Before I had a chance to even say hello, or how are you, he said “I haven’t written it yet. In case you were wondering. OK?”

Once he had gotten that confession off of his chest he seemed a lot happier, but later over a beer our conversation turned back to writing.

“Actually, it really bugs me that I haven’t written my book yet,” he said, toying with his bottle and reading the label. “Don’t suppose you have any tips?”

Well, it just so happened that I did. Apart from pointing him at a couple of good books, including the Author’s Toolkit, I introduced him to the idea of a step by step schedule. We took a few hours to talk through exactly what he wanted to do. Then I helped him break down the big idea into a series of smaller steps. Then we took the first step and broke it down into smaller steps. Then we took the first of those small steps and broke that down into a couple of steps. Suddenly he stopped me. “I get it, I get it!” He was getting it.

We had created steps so small and easy, that he knew exactly what to do to get to the first bigger step in his list, which would get him part way to getting his biggest step one done, and then he’d be well on his way to completing his goal.

With a renewed fire in his eyes and excitement in his voice, he apologised that he had to act quickly now he could see clearly what to do, and he shot off to get going on his project.

I sat back and finished my beer, and then suddenly thought of a dozen things I should be doing instead, so I soon vanished to get productive too.

What about you? What are you doing?
